What is Reishi?

Reishi mushrooms, also known as Ling Zhi in Chinese, have been used medicinally in Asia for over two thousand years. It comes in various forms, such as Reishi capsules, Reishi powder, and Reishi tincture. The mushroom grows primarily on the trunks and branches of trees in the subtropical and temperate zones of the world. Reishi is a polypore mushroom, meaning it has a spongy underside that absorbs nutrients from its host tree. The mushroom has a long and varied history of use in traditional medicine, where it was used to treat everything from fatigue and anxiety to asthma and cancer—although scientific evidence for these effects is still lacking.

The first recorded use of Reishi mushrooms in Traditional Chinese Medicine appeared in the Shennong Bencao Jing, an ancient pharmacopoeia dating back to the first century AD. The Shennong Bencao Jing described how Reishi was used to treat a variety of conditions, including malaria and ulcers. In the centuries that followed, even more uses for this mushroom were suggested—from treating hepatitis to enhancing male performance.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, Reishi or Ling Zhi is one of the 50 fundamental herbs said to be an essential part of a healthy diet. Practitioners of Traditional Chinese Medicine believe it can help protect against inflammation and reduce swelling. Some practitioners also believe it may have anti-tumor properties.

What does Reishi do?

The polysaccharides found in Ling Zhi mushrooms have been shown to benefit the immune system by activating neutrophils, natural killer cells, and macrophages. These are all vital components of the body’s immune system.

One of the most important benefits of Reishi is its ability to promote a good night’s sleep. By helping to regulate the body’s hormonal balance, Reishi can help ensure you get the deep, restful sleep you need to recover and rejuvenate. This makes it an excellent supplement to take during busy periods or when you’re under a lot of stress. Taking Reishi before bed may help you wake up feeling refreshed and energized.

The mushroom has antioxidant effects because it stimulates the production of enzymes in the liver that neutralize free radicals. Therefore, it is believed that Reishi may offer protection against damage caused by toxins and pollutants. It also contains a protein called Ling Zhi-8, which is sometimes claimed and thought to inhibit the growth of cancer cells by blocking certain signaling pathways.

Other research on chemical compounds isolated from Reishi has shown that some of these have anti-tumor properties—although most of these studies were conducted on animals. Furthermore, some extracts isolated from Ling Zhi mushrooms have been successfully used to combat drug-resistant tuberculosis in mice. Of course, these results do not guarantee the same effect in humans.
